The Great Hall was decorated with Yule colors, christmas trees and ice statues glittered in every concievable space. In tuxedos and flowing dresses people flitted around the dance floor, the dance area was bordered by small tables which summoned food on command. At the south end of the hall opposite the entrance a band played, to the right of the stage was the drinks station. Butterbeer and pumpkin juice for the younger students, fifth sixth and seventh years could get firewisky or other more potent beverages.
Gwendolyn Xiang stepped quietly into the hall in a large group, amidst the couples she was the only one without a date. She was wearing a lovely scarlet oriental style dress, it was formfitting and came down to her ankles. Her turquoise streaks had been changed to gold and red to match her dress, with all this she felt a bit like the Gryffindor house mascot.
Gwen wasn't too fussed about not having a date, she had more important things on her mind; like the Daily Prophet article about were-wolf attacks in Hogsmeade. True the fourteen year old witch had met a new friend, but she would never be able to forgive herself. Ignoring the jeering call from Slytherins and a few vulgar catcalls from other boys, Gwen sat down at a vacant table. She swayed gently in time with the music and watched the couples dancing, despite what she told herself she did winder what it was like. To love someone.

And lonelieness can be so hard to bear but other times it really dosen't matter. Because love is more often than not just around the corner. Thats what the difficult thing is. Waiting when you have no idea. Because for all you know there could be someone out there, just waiting for you. And thats all they've ever been waiting for. You just don't know.
The Great hall was bedecked all in festive colours, shimmering golds and silvers, huge green pine trees. and sprigs of holly at ever edge. And the clothes, all the clothes. Shimmering dresses in all shades of aquamarine, topaz, jet and amethyst. To name but a few. Ebony crossed teh hall in a daze, her own silver white dress shimmered in the dacing lights as she wend her lonely way across the hall. Mind spinning. The attcks had been reported, butit had felt so right, at the time. And the girl. The beautiful girl. She crossed to the bar, getting herself a drink and scanning the hall for soewhere to sit until she had the oppertunity to dance. And that was when she saw her, or rather smelt. For the girl, the ebony coloured wolf as sh had been, was sat there alone. Ebony felt a sudden heady rush that had nothing to do with the ball.
Reaching behin her she grabbed another glass of somthing ans made her way across the hall, slowly and carefully. Arriving at the table she set the drinks down and sank into a seat. Heyah she said queitly, just loud enough to be audible, knowing that the girls more sensetive ears would pick it up.

The table cloth was magically repairing itself as Gwendolyn picked at it with her butter knife. She was absorbed cutting the fine strands one at a time and watching them reweave themselves once about four had been cut. And then her ears pricked, much like they did when she was a wolf. Gwen hated the sensation, but she trusted it, her hearing had saved her many times. Footsteps, high heels, coming toward her.
For a moment the girl thought about leaving, getting up and going somewhere else, she wasn't in the mood for someone else. But then her second heightened sense kicked in, smell. It was a familiar, musky kind of smell, strong and spicy, but with a soft undertone similar to jasmine. Ebony sat down next to her and Gwen dropped the knife and looked up. Their eyes met. This was the russet wolf from the other night. The witch's head told her, This is the one you met, this is the one you hunted with, this is the one you killed with. But her heart told her, This is a friend.
"Hi." Gwendolyn murmered back, her eyes dropped to her hands that were twisted in her lap. What if the other girl hated her, for what she had done the other night. What if the other girl thought she was stupid, or something, Gwen wouldn't blame her if she did. Her pretty almond shaped asian eyes peaked out at the ginger haired witch from beneath their rim of thick black eyelashes.

If we were to take offence for everythning that was ever directed at us would we still make friends? Probably not. And similarly, if wewere to hold again those we knoe every bad thing would we stil love them? Probably not. And this was the philosophy that Ebony held, so she pushed aside all her revulsion at death for she had killed too and settled down to make a proper friend.
Heyah[/b[ she said softly, reaching behind her to pick up her drink and take a small sip. Then place it back on the table. You okay?[/b[ she asked. And her words were loaded with meaning. Whilst it may have seemed like an innocent question her eyes held the full story. Are you okay? We killed you know, wwe're gonna have to live with that. You can can't you? And yet at the same time she felt an eletric connection. A fellow wolf. It was the most wonderful thing that could have happened.
She smiled at the girl before she glanced out around the hall at the differetn sets of people dancing together or standing in groups chatting. No date? she asked a small smile tugging at the corners of her mouth. She had none but she knew why

"I'm fine." came the murmured reply. It was a lie of course, she wasn't fine, not in the slightest. But she didn't blame anyone but herself for what had happened. Gwen could forget it for this night. For at least one night she would put it all behind her. A hand raised and brushed her long black hair from in front of her face and smiled at Ebony her green eyes were warm, she liked this girl. She had a connection with her that had nothing to do with being a werewolf.
"No date. No one wants to take me." Gwen responded lightly, she rolled her eyes jokingly. It was true, no one wanted to take the odd little Asian girl with the funny hair and makeup. Gold rimmed her eyes tonight instead of the normal electric blue. The light shade made her eyes seem bigger, she liked it, but prefered her bright pigments to the more somber shades.

If it wasnt for the creation of absinthe all men would eventually turn gay. Maybe not true but it was a nice thought, one that had made Ebony smile in her darker times. And she now voiced it allowed for Gwen, hoping to cheer her a little. She liked the other wolf and hated to see her sad, she wished there was somthing she could do to help. Hey, its not the be all and end all, i've got no date either. she didnt move to voice the rest of her train of thought, It was not worth the hassle it would cause.
Staring ought at the floor she watched the slowly revolving couples, boys and girls, twirling about, twined in each others arms. She looked almost wistfully after them. HAlf wishing she had somone to dance with.
